The families of Red and Roe deer that can be found using this wood led to the name Spring Buck Wood. The woodland provides a perfect situation for observing these beautiful creatures. The wood benefits from a truly peaceful location, fine views of the North Devon countryside as well as being only 15 miles from Saunton sands. This beach is a great surfing beach and is part of the River Taw Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_of_Outstanding_Natural_Beauty and the site of the UNESCO biosphere reserve of the Braunton burrows http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braunton_Burrows . The tranquillity of this wood along with its topography and clear wood floor provides a truly excellent camping location.
The woodland is accessed via its own good track that takes you into the heart of the wood, and indeed provides 4x4 access right through the internal ride. These are perfect for any timber extraction. The tree species is Western Hemlock planted in 1968 that has been well thinned. This is good working timber and is used in the construction and joinery industries. There is also a rich diversity of fauna within the woodland including both Red and Roe deer along with Badgers and sightings of Foxes.
Umberleigh is a quiet village set around the old three-arched Umberleigh bridge, by the river Taw. This area by the river Taw is famous as the home of Tarka the Otter. Umberleigh has a village Post Office, Tea Rooms, Railway Station and a popular pub.
The woodland is only 6 miles from Barnstaple on the A377 with the towns of South Molton and Torrington 8 miles away on the B3227. Umberleigh is served by the Tarka line train with wonderful views to Umberleigh Station. Trains run from Barnstaple to Exeter every hour.
The villages of Chittlehampton, Chittlehamholt and Atherington are only two miles in each direction from the bridge, and all well worth a visit.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Heading North on A377 take a right turn to Umberleigh by 'The Rising Sun' pub. Continue over the bridge and take first right turn by the Tea Rooms. Continue past the Post Office, over the railway crossing and on for about two miles, following signs to Warkleigh. When you reach Warkleigh, look for a farmhouse and a large church on your right. About 100 metres after this turn right at Pool cross, signposted 'Pool' (a no through road). Follow the track down for around 200 metres until it splits into two. If you have a car you will need to park to the left just before the split, making sure you don't block access to the field gate and the lane itself. If you have a 4x4 or the ground clearance you can continue.
Follow the track straight on down the hill, passing the 'woodlands for sale' sign on the first gate to the right, to where the river crosses the track. Park to the left just after this. Enter the second of the gates with a 'woodlands for sale' sign on, with a Spring Buck wood name sign on. This is the woodland!
