Description
As the gentle slopes of the southern Cotswold Hills drop down the Avon valley towards the river, this peaceful woodland area of outstanding natural beauty is located along a length of private woodland track.
Herons Covert is a mixed woodland of beech, oak, ash and hazel, along with stands of mature conifer. Woodland of this period was often originally planted as game cover for the landed classes to enjoy sporting pursuits in the great outdoors; this entire tract of woodland and open countryside having once formed part of a large country estate; the principle house of which still stands in the nearby town. The wildlife continues to flourish here in abundance. Roe and muntjac deer roam freely in the woods and the stealthy, sharp eyed observer may even catch a glimpse of a stoat. The white winter 'ermine' coat of this most elusive woodland creature having once been a sign of great affluence when worn by the wealthy classes of nearby Georgian Bath.
This secluded area of woodland offers true diversity of habitat. At the fringes the sunlight penetrates into the wood across open fields from the south east. Once in amongst the trees a striking landscape of ground flora, towering broadleaf trees and hazel understory, provides many fascinating hollows and undulations to explore. Midway along the southern boundary there is a small woodland pond.

Herons Covert, as the name suggest is home to these majestic birds; being one of only a few colonies in the area. Such is the significance if this heronry that an annual count of the nests is carried out by a local wildlife survey group to monitor the colony. Many heron species have faced persecution during the 19th and early 20th centuries due to hunting for their plumes, which were used for hat decorations. They’re present on all continents except Antarctica and inhabit a wide variety of habitats, feeding on the margins of water bodies such as lakes, rivers, and the sea.
This woodland takes its name not only from the term 'covert' for a thicket for game to hide but also an ornithological term 'covert' for a feather covering the base of a main flight or tail feather of a bird.

Directions
From Bradford On Avon follow the B3107 east towards Holt / Melksham. After a mile you will see a small concreted opening in the hedge on your right hand side (What3words: cans. operation. mergers) as you approach a crossroads (just before the turning into a cottage). This is the access track to the woods. Follow this track across the fields towards the woodland gate; passing the cottage and barns on your left.
This gate is kept locked for security but you can contact Daniel 07780 900192 for the code to the combination padlock. Please make sure this gate is kept secured during and after your visit.
Beyond the gateway the track bends sharply to the right. Continue for about 250 metres until a junction with other woodland tracks at a small open fronted shed. You can then park here taking care not to obstruct the track and continue along the straight central access track, passing over another bisecting track after 300 metres, until, after a further 300 metres you will see the entrance and pink markings for Herons Covert on your left.
Please also refer to the 'wood maps' tab to assist you with finding your way.
