Description
Riverside Wood exemplifies the ideal for small woodland ownership as it provides so much of the appeal of the rural environment in one area; with an ideal blend of mature woodland, meadow and river frontage in a private and peaceful setting.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
The diversity here is notable. Many of the species here were planted at a time when woodland was enjoyed for sporting cover and fine specimens of oak and beech have been left to develop to maturity, whilst beneath this capacious canopy slow growing box and laurel have spread to provide wildlife cover amongst the hazel coppice. As the land slopes gently towards the river water tolerant hawthorn, alder and willow can be seen.
Wildlife
A well established mix of diverse trees and plants so near the river Avon, results in a profusion of wildlife. A richness of waterborne insects creates opportunity for numerous indigenous and migrant birds and a strong residual population of woodland mammals thrive in this resource rich environment. It is a common site to see deer browsing in the river meadow and the well worn animals trails down to the waters edge tell of frequent night time visitors. In particular there is strong evidence that beaver colonies are re-establishing themselves in this hospitable riverine habitat after centuries of absence. Distinctive teeth marks on the trees at the water's edge and their unique engineering prowess are present along this stretch of the river.
Features
There is so much here to discover. The woodland tells us much about our recent history. In the first instance the very mix of trees speaks of a time as a playground of the land owning gentry and wealthy industrialists who created and preserved these rural environments for their sporting enjoyment as game cover. More recently the spectre of war hangs over the landscape as the woodland has within it a WW2 pillbox, so named after its distinctive shape and designed to provide a strategic line of defense in the event of enemy invasion.
Access, tracks and footpaths
Riverside Wood retains a high degree of privacy as it is set back from the road along a well made private track that provides a right of way. There are no public footpaths running through the wood.
Activities
Access to the river provides numerous possibilities for wildlife observation and also the opportunity to swim, boat, fish, camp and protect this unique rural enclave.
Local area and history
The woodland here was formerly part of the Moulton Hall estate. The principle house known as 'The Hall', can still be seen in the nearby town of Bradford on Avon where the original mansion built in 1610 was rescued from ruin in 1848 by Stephen Moulton who bought new wealth to the town through the manufacture of rubber.
Bradford On Avon is a thriving market town at a bridging point on the river Avon. The historic charm of the town is still much in evidence with a wealth of period buildings dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth century at a time of great local prosperity founded on the wool industry.
Bath is only a few miles further afield with all that the city has to offer.
