Description
The delightful character of Tansy Wood offers much variety to a new owner. On first entering the wood the dominance of maturing oak forms an appealing habitat that offers teasing glimpses of other privately owned surrounding woodland. The understory here provides areas of dense bracken thicket for woodland mammals where young holly and occasional beech compete for space. There are a number of trails running through the undergrowth, worn by the repeated passing of native wildlife amongst the fragile grasses and woodland flowers, from which this wood takes its name.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
Further into the woodland the greater variety of tree types continues to interest. There is, birch , ash, cherry and hazel amongst occasional conifer and some fine specimens on the northern boundary where an ancient bank and ditch defines Tansy Wood from neighbouring woodland.
Activities
This wood was originally part of a larger single woodland ownership but in recent months a new community of small woodland owners has developed here and the signs of active engagement in this beautiful environment are now much in evidence. From bird and bat boxes on trees, to freshly prepared log piles and bramble clearing; this activity is encouraging new wildlife and bringing the enjoyment of nature to a new generation of woodland owners.
Local area and history
Clifton Hampden takes its name from its setting on the banks of the river Thames on a raised bluff or 'cliff' overlooking the river. The origin of the second part of the village name is less certain but is thought to derive from the surname of a seventeenth century incumbent of a local manor.
The wider surrounding area is characterised by the natural beauty of rural Oxfordshire. Nearby Abingdon provides a range of everyday services for the woodland visitor and in spite of the peaceful location there is excellent access to Oxford, Reading and the motorway network.
