Description
Situated on the Southern outskirts of the border town of Carlisle, Priory meadow is but a few minutes drive from junction 42 of the M6. The land is quite flat to the south, sloping gently away to the northern boundary. This gives good drainage and shelter from the prevailing winds in this area. Regularly harvested and grazed, the grass is in good condition with several species present together with clover and other wild flowers.
Although open, the land is regularly visited by transient Roe deer which are often sighted around dawn and dusk. A wide variety of small bird species find refuge and food in the hedgerow bounding the meadow.
Entry is via a gate off a minor road, onto good hard standing, and from there along a green lane through another gate and into the meadow.
Priory Meadow is well suited for equestrian or general livestock grazing. Although there is no water in the field, reliable drinking water could easily be supplied by a bowser or an IBC (Intermediate Bulk container).
Nearby is the charming village of Cumwhinton, originaly named Cumquinton from the Celtic for valley of a man named Quinton. Weatheral Priory, a fascinating building, from which the meadow takes its name, is very close by. A fortified gatehouse in the form of a miniature Pele tower is all that remains of a small Benedictine priory. It was a welcome sanctuary for any one escaping from the lawless Reivers that once ranged across this area.
