Description
Previously part of a working dairy farm, Burgh Wood has more recently been managed for wildlife enhancement with the addition of a small grove of trees along the south western edge providing increased biodiversity. There is scope to add to this area as well as a further open meadow area at the north western part of the woodland.
Meandering through the heart of the woodland is a beautiful tree lined stream.
Burgh Wood is a perfect place for family camping trips, wildlife enjoyment and as a base to explore the stunning local coastline around nearby Burgh Island.
The purchasers of the meadow will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
Towering oaks dominate the tree canopy along with ash whilst nearer the stream there are alders and poplars.
The understorey of the woodland contains hazel, which is ideal for coppicing, along with other shrub species such as hawthorn.
There is a recently planted grove of trees at the south of the site with birch, rowan and hazel.
Wildlife
Burgh Wood is a haven for wildlife and provides an excellent habitat to observe and enjoy a wide variety of different species.
Deer and badgers frequent the woodland along with foxes and bats. Otter spraint has been found upon a prominent rock further down the stream, a characteristic sign that these iconic mammals are also using the stream within and around Burgh Wood.
Features
The pleasant stream that winds through the centre of the woodland is a wonderful feature. Arising a mile or so at the north of Burgh Wood, the stream flows through the woodland and then onto the Avon estuary and eventually into the sea at Bigbury-on-sea.
Access, tracks and footpaths
From the public highway there is a metalled road which leads to the main entrance gate. From here a stoned track leads to the woodland and along the northern boundary.
Near the entrance is a small stoned area for parking.
There are no public rights of way.

Activities
Woodland management activities such as coppicing can be enjoyed within Burgh Wood. Recently planted trees can be nutured and there is scope for further tree planting upon the open meadow, perhaps in the form of an orchard of fruit trees.
A popular activity with some woodland owners is to become immersed in the tranquil habitat and enjoy nature via hammocking. Take your hammock into the woodland, look for two sturdy trees with ample space between them. Use 'tree huggers' to protect the tree bark. Embrace the natural environment within your snug shelter!
Local area and history
All boundaries are indicated with green markings on posts and trees.
The northern boundary is along the forestry track.
The eastern boundary is a line of fence posts.
The southern boundary is partly along the stream and the road.
The western boundary is a line of fence posts.

Boundaries
The nearby rural village of Aveton Gifford has a community shop and a pub as well as the church of St Andrews, one of the oldest churches in Devon constructed around 1250 AD. From here the River Avon eventually joins the sea at Avonmouth, set between the popular beaches of Bantham Sands and Bigbury-on-Sea.
These beaches are within 15 minutes drive of Burgh Wood - Bantham is a great surfing beach, and the marvellous Bigbury-on-Sea hosts Burgh Island where you can enjoy lunch at the Pilchard Inn. A walk on the beach or a trip on the sea tractor if the tide is in and the Island cut off is always fun.
Modbury lies a couple miles to the north along the A379 and is a thriving market town with a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants.
Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager, Stuart Brooking.
