Gallant Wood £69,000 Freehold

  • Near Branscombe, Sidmouth, Devon
  • over 3 ½ acres
  • Devon

Description

Gallant Wood is an accessible mature woodland with a desirable mixture of tree species. These include some good sized conifer trees and a mature broadleaved section.

The name 'Gallant' has a couple of derivatives - Llan in Gallant can mean Church or village with Church (Celtic) which is a nod to St Winifred's Church in the nearby coastal village of Branscombe. This Church can be accessed from a nearby footpath that takes you towards the sea and along Locksey's Lane.

As a surname Gallant is from the Old French word 'galer' which meant 'to enjoy oneself' and became a nickname for a cheerful or high-spirited person - the effect of spending time within this wonderful woodland setting!

The hazel trees could be coppiced to give a sustainable supply of pea sticks, hurdle material and firewood. The purchaser could even invest in a small charcoal kiln to produce their own charcoal, enough to supply a few family and friends!

Gallant Wood is set near the top of a peaceful valley that has good access from the A3052 via a stoned track. The woodland is within an easy drive or a more adventurous walk of the coastal village of Branscombe allowing plenty of opportunities to explore the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

Trees

Douglas fir trees planted in 1971 alongside Sitka Spruce planted in 1986 have been well looked after and kept clear underneath. There is also a fine area of mature broadleaved trees including towering old oak trees, ash, birch and hazel.

Wildlife

The quietness of the woodland and the surrounding forest and meadows provides good habitat for a number of woodland mammals and birds. Bird species include woodpeckers, tree creepers, nuthatches and the faithful robin. Badgers frequent the woodland from a nearby sett and foxes hunt for food at dawn and dusk. Butterflies enjoy the open glades in the broadleaved woodland section.

Features

The stream within Gallant Wood rises to the western side of the woodland and runs west to east eventually joining another stream which then runs all the way to join the sea at Branscombe Mouth.

There are a number of older oak trees within the broadleaved woodland area, some of which could be considered as Veteran trees. Within the nearby village of Branscombe are some ancient ash pollards which used to be cut regularly to create wood for the old bakery's bread ovens. Pollarding is the process of removing the upper branches of a tree to allow regrowth and provide a regular source of timber and has been in place since at least the Roman times.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Access to the woodland is via a shared stoned forestry track.

There are no public rights of way within the woodland.

Rights and covenants

As is the case for all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland.

Activities

Immerse yourself within this special place using the practice of Forest bathing, a form of relaxation, being calm within the woodland environment and observing nature while breathing deeply.

The open ground conditions provide a great spot for overnight camping.

Local area and history

As well as being within walking distance of the picturesque coastal village of Branscombe, the nearby coastline around Seaton and Sidmouth is the beginning of a World Heritage Site consisting of 95 miles of Jurassic coastline that begins at Orcombe point is also not far from the wood.

Historical places can be found within the local area such as Blackberry Camp, an Iron Age hill fort.

There are plenty of attractive villages to explore nearby such as Beer with its shingle beach and small fleet of working fishing boats, Axmouth with a picturesque harbour and the important wetland site for birds along with the coastal town of Seaton and market town of Honiton all being within an easy reach of Gallant Wood.

Please do enjoy your visit to Gallant Wood, but take care of any undulating ground or trip hazards as well as standing or leaning deadwood which has been left as a wildlife habitat.

Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager, Stuart Brooking.
