The majority of the woodland is mixed broadleaved trees planting around the year 2000 with a fringe of older trees around the stream. The woodland has generally established well and includes a diverse range of species such as cherry, ash, oak, beech, field maple, blackthorn and spindle.

Upon the stream fringe are some majestic older oaks.

The stream lined woodland with a variety of tree species is an excellent habitat for wildlife. The stream shows numerous signs of use by otters, including shortcut paths. There have been recent sightings of otters in the daytime further downstream which is exciting.

The stream flows south and then east, joining a stretch of water known as Langham Lake, which then heads south to join the River Taw. On occasion the owner may spot the electric blue flash of a kingfisher darting along the stream.

Wild cherry trees support a number of pollinating insects such as bees with their spring flowers and their cherries are a valuable source of food for mammals such as the wood mouse and birds, including the song thrush.

Open rides through Heccaton Bridge Wood allow good access to most areas of the woodland. They can also be used as level areas for summer camping.

Access to the woodland is from a quiet country lane onto a shared stoned forestry track.

There are no public rights of way within the woodland.

This wood is a real gem for wildlife enjoyment, deer can often be seen, otters are known to be in the area. Further biodiversity can be encouraged with the siting of bird and bat boxes.

The level nature of the woodland and streamside setting make Heccaton Bridge Wood an idyllic location for relaxed camping and days out with family and friends.

This is a great place for younger generations to explore the great outdoors and paddle in the stream.

Surrounding Heccaton Bridge Wood are several small Devon hamlets such as Hiscott and Harracott along with a number of traditional farmsteads whose occupants have maintained the landscape for hundreds of years.

Nearby is one of the largest rivers in Devon, the river Taw, which was made famous in Henry Williamson's delightful novel 'Tarka the otter'. The Taw estuary is part of the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere reserve.

Adjacent to the river at Chapelton is the Tarka railway line, a picturesque train route through the heart of north and mid Devon between the town of Barnstaple near the north coast and Devon's capital City Exeter.
