Description
Gleam Wood is a delight to visit with not only its wide variety of trees and excellent access but the highlight is the small lake surrounded by grassy areas. An afternoon watching dragon flies over the water really is a remedy for todays busy life. A feeling of wellbeing is generated by time spent quietly with nature.
Gleam Wood stands in a larger commercially managed forest on the edge of Scunthorpe next to the village of Broughton a few minutes’ drive from the M180.
Away from the small lake the woodland is level with fertile soil up to a metre in depth that sits on a sub of loose limestone making the woodland free draining. The ground flora includes a number of ferns, such as the scaly male, hard shield and bracken. The closed canopy casts a shadow over the vegetation but you will find a variety of wildflowers including primroses, violets, early purple orchid and red campion, followed by dog’s mercury with grasses on the minor tracks.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
The woodland contains fine quality timber as well as important fire wood for the homeowner looking at reducing his fuel bills. Stands of mature Corsican pine are abundant in this area of woodland.
Wildlife
Features
It is very rare that we see woods with such a pretty small lake come to the market. The area is spring fed and offers owners a perfect spot to camp, picnic or just spend time with family and friends. Behind the lake is an area of mature pine trees, this would be an ideal place to build a nature hide to watch the wildlife. Sycamore and silver birch grow well in the northern area of the woodland.
Access, tracks and footpaths
The woodland has the benefit of an excellent stoned access track suitable for most family vehicles providing all year access to the woodland.
There are no public footpaths running through the wood.
Rights and covenants
The woodland covenant is in place to assure the preservation of this important environment along with the additional security of a local authority Tree Preservation Order to assist with sound forestry practice for the future stewardship of the wood.
Activities
A perfect family wood, good for camping and numerous outdoor activities. Great childhood adventures could take place within this woodland. The small lake has a good head of fish, see the photo below which is ideal for fishing. Further use of the lake could include using a punt which would be perfect for navigating the expanses of the lake.
For those seeking a tranquil retreat it could be ideal for meditation. The simple experience of being calm and quiet amongst the trees, observing nature around you whilst breathing deeply. Perhaps the ultimate post Covid remedy.
Local area and history
The woodland was used as a depot during the Second World War. The trees gave cover to vital supplies used to keep the local Royal Airforce running and for that reason has some of the best woodland tracks which are suitable for most cars throughout the year.
The wood gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon period the area of nearby Brigg became known as Glanford. The second element of the name is not disputed, but the origin of the first element is unclear. It is possibly derived from the Old English gleam meaning joy or revelry, I know anyone owning the woodland will feel a certain amount of joy.
