Description
Woodland for sale in Hertfordshire is a very rare thing. The number of woods coming to market has always been very limited in this part of England. This is not due to a lack of woodland in this area but more to do with long family ownership. Woods are special and seem to be one of the last assets people sell.
Situated within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in delightful rural Hertfordshire countryside, this rectangular shaped woodland is nestled in the north east corner of a larger area of privately owned woodlands. To the north is an arable field, to the south and west are private woodlands. The east of the woodland is bordered by the highway making access very easy.
Scarecrow Wood is 2 miles to the west of Flamstead and 2 miles south of Markyate. Berkhamsted is 7 miles, St. Albans 9 miles and Harpenden 8 miles. Excellent transport links via the M1 – junction 9 at Flamstead is nearby – M25 and A1(M) motorways. All distances are approximate.
The What 3 words location for the wood entrance is enough.bond.paradise.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
Wildlife
The surrounding land and the woodland is under the protection as part of the green belt and as such the numerous woodland species that live here have enjoyed a stable environment beyond the invasive urban spread in many parts of the country. It is perhaps for this reason that there is much evidence of elusive woodland creatures thriving in Scarecrow Wood. Numerous animal trails across the forest floor. The gnarled bark and fallen branches and brash of the trees provide perfect nesting for birds.
Fallow deer are a common sight browsing between the trees amidst the cover of the bracken. The dramatic spectacle of a large fallow buck with antlers aloft crashing through the undergrowth is sure to get the heart racing.
Features
The woodland has a wonderfully open feeling with well spaced trees which will continue to grow and spread their boughs eventually creating a more closed canopy in summer.
A small track from the entrance into the woodland leading to a bench. Please take some time when visiting to sit and take in the atmosphere.
Being next to open ground along the northern border allows extra light into the wood, this is turn encourages growth of brambles and other woodland flora. This is in turn is favoured by the deer that frequent this wood as they are often seen grazing in this area.
Access, tracks and footpaths
The woodland is accessed from the highway via a very solid stoned forestry track suitable for most vehicles. The main wood entrance is locked with a new farm style gate providing wood owners security, a key will be provided to the buyer.
Activities
This woodland is in an ideal area to spend a well-deserved relaxing time amongst some amazing wildlife. To perfectly capture this, you could set up some wildlife cameras or even build a wildlife hide from fallen branches and bracken in summer. This could also be a place to spend time camping with your family and friends, a perfect rural retreat.
Local area and history
An annual Scarecrow Festival has been held in Flamstead to raise funds for the upkeep of the church and for local charities. It is one of the villages social events and marks the rural heritage of the area. The wood is named as a reminder of this.
The area has been farmed for over a thousand years and many of the woodlands have probably been wooded in different forms for that period and longer. Many of these small woodlands are havens for an abundance of wildlife.
