Description
Woodland for sale in Hertfordshire is a very rare thing. The number of woods coming to market has always been very limited in this part of England. This is not due to a lack of woodland in this area but more to do with long family ownership. Woods are special and seem to be one of the last assets people sell.
Situated within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in delightful rural Hertfordshire countryside, this rectangular shaped woodland is surrounded by arable fields on two sides with private woodland to the other two.
Verulamstead Wood is 2 miles to the west of Flamstead and 2 miles south of Markyate. Berkhamsted is 7 miles, St. Albans 9 miles and Harpenden 8 miles. Excellent transport links via the M1 – junction 9 at Flamstead is nearby – M25 and A1(M) motorways. All distances are approximate.
The What 3 words location for the wood entrance is shampoo, regress, rejoin.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
You are greeted at first by a glorious display of beech trees approximately 60 years old. The trees were thinned in 2015 and are well spaced, tall and acquiring girth. A little further into the wood there is an area of Scots pine, also 60 years of age. Equally valuable are the scattering of oak adding diversity and interest. Beech, sweet chestnut, oak and cherry, are all showing good form and character.
Wildlife
The surrounding land and the woodland is under the protection as part of the green belt and as such the numerous woodland species that live here have enjoyed a stable environment beyond the invasive urban spread in many parts of the country. It is perhaps for this reason that there is much evidence of elusive woodland creatures thriving in Verulamstead Wood. Numerous animal trails across the forest floor and the gnarled bark and fallen branches and brash of the trees provide perfect nesting for birds of prey, stoat and weasel.
Fallow deer are a common sight browsing between the trees amidst the cover of the bracken. The dramatic spectacle of a large fallow buck with antlers aloft crashing through the undergrowth is sure to get the heart racing.
Features
Its open nature and level ground make this wood ideal for family forestry.
Access, tracks and footpaths
The woodland has the benefit of an excellent stoned access track suitable for most family vehicles providing year-round access. A wide grass ride also gives good access too the eastern side of the wood.
Activities
A ideal wood for family forestry, observing wildlife and just getting away from modern day life.
Local area and history
Flamstead is a village in north-west Hertfordshire, England, close to the junction of the A5 and the M1 at junction 9. The name is thought by some historians to be a corruption of the original Verulamstead and so the woodland is named after this.
