Description
Coed Pentyrch is nestled on the side of a south facing slope. Named after the hill behind, it's a wood of differing sections. At the top there is an area of single furrow ploughed Larch and Douglas Fir, whilst lower down there are areas of Oak, Willow and Hazel.
The woodland is interlaced with tracks, perhaps from previous woodland management. These tracks provide lovely clearings, ideal for camping or exploring. They also offer ease of extraction for felling should this be needed. Through out the woodland the tracks are fringed by large old Oaks, many of which may be upwards of a 100 years old.
At the access point of the woodland, a clearing has made, which provides a space to leave a vehicle in dry conditions. Pathways lead into the main area of trees, or it is possible to continue up the shared track and enter at a higher point.
it is below the ancient settlement of Pen y Bwlch on the hill Moel Bentyrch, a beautiful walk with wide panoramic views in any season.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
Coed Pentyrch has been managed and thoughtfully planted.
At the upper part there are Douglas Fir, Larch and mature Oak. Lower down there are areas of Oak, Sycamore, Hazel to name few.
Wildlife
During our work in the woodland we have been lucky enough to see Red Deer grazing outside our tents in the early morning. There are also a few badger dens, some old and some active.
Spring and summer sees numerous butterflies and insects.
The birdlife is diverse, from Canadian Geese nesting on the lake in the valley below the wood, to large buzzards and kites circling overhead. We've also seen and heard a pair of peregrine falcons while we've been working in the woodland.
The woodland and fields are full of life the whole year round.
Features
Coed Pentyrch has a network of tracks leading through it. Some of these are accessible on foot, some with an off road vehicle.
The upper area has views across the Banwy Valley, however the beauty of this woodland is in the clearings and sheer amount of trees and nature. There is evidence of some old walls. Coed Pentyrch shares a small water course on its western boundary.
Access, tracks and footpaths
Coed Pentyrch is accessed from the main track leading into the woodland. Walk along this track then take the turning right and uphill through the double (locked) gates. Continue upwards until you see the sign for the woodland. There is a space on your left for a vehicle at this point.
The western boundary is the edge of the track that leads uphill. The northern boundary is found at the turning circle at the top and runs alongside a neighbouring woodland track. The eastern boundary runs down the centre of a small water course, gently at first then steeper until it reaches the lower track.
The southern boundary runs alongside the very visible woodland track.
All boundaries are marked in pink.
Activities
Llanerfyl is a village and community in Montgomeryshire, Powys, Wales. Located near the River Banwy, the community includes the village of Llanerfyl, several farms and wide tracts of marchland. The village contains St Erfyl's church, rebuilt in 1870. It contains the remnants of a 15th-century shrine. The circular churchyard has in it a gravestone from either the 5th or 6th century possibly commemorating Santess (female saint) Gwerfyl.
In the village please pay a visit to the wonderful cafe and village shop - Y Cwpan Pinc.
Nearby is the Cann Office Hotel - Bedrooms, restaurant and take away.
Opposite the woodlands is the well maintained Bluebell Park, for caravans, camping and fishing.
The area is full of things to do and places to visit, such as Powys Castle and Rhiw Steam Railway.
Local area and history
This area is right on the edge of the Cambrian mountains and isn't too far from Llyn Vyrnwy. The 6000 acre Dyfnant Forest (described by Lonely Planet as being "where a well-signposted maze of forestry tracks culminates in one enormous hill before descending rather spectacularly toward Lake Vyrnwy").
Standing at 335m behind the meadows and woodlands is the hill, Moel Bentyrch. Here you will find the old settlement of Pen y Bwlch (Top of the Pass) a testament to a much older community in this area.
