Description
Culdrum Woodland lies along the bank of the Macosquin River, a small river known for its brown trout and salmon. The river is also home to kingfishers and otters. Fishing rights are included.
The wood is in a quiet area of rolling farmland which is tucked away in the Derry countryside to the west of the Lower Bann yet only minutes from the bustling city of Coleraine. You approach along a surfaced track which rises to the top of the hill, affording fine views of the pastoral landscape, with the Sperrins rising to the east.
Originally planted on a former organic farm in 2006, the woodland has since developed into a haven of peace and tranquility, with a variety of native species including oak, birch, ash willow and alder. Autumn colours are spectacular with red cherry foliage, golden beech leaves and bright red rose hips. Some signs of the previous use will be found on the land. There is an overgrown shed by the open area that could be brought back into use.
The woodland is divided into three distinct areas: a sloping section to the north where there are more densely planted areas of trees; a low-lying area near the river with more sporadic planting, a riverside walk, open areas and a wildlife pond; and another sloping area to the south consisting mainly of densely planted oak and beech.
Near the entrance lies a useful outbuilding which could be used for storage and occasional overnight stays.
The obvious appeal is as a getaway rich in wildlife. The original owner has built an observation hide to watch the animals and birds that use the river to live around, feed in and travel along. Along with the pond, this could be developed into a superb spot for wildlife photography.
There is also the potential for small scale firewood production for your own use, as the trees will soon be big enough for coppicing or thinning and there is access for a tractor or quad to the northern end of the wood. With careful thinning and pruning the trees on this fertile site will develop into fine specimens.
We are selling on behalf of the present owner and if you have viewed the wood please speak to Andrew Clark if you would like to make an offer.
