Description
The woods at Millbank are a delight for both young and old and Skene Wood is no exception. Set within the heart of the much wider woodland of 80 acres at Millbank, with majestic towering pines, interspersed with birch, beech, larch and rowan, Skene Wood has a flavour of everything, both coniferous and deciduous. While the trees are growing well, the understory is equally strong; a diverse kaleidoscope of fern and sorrel, with a multitude of wildflowers. Plenty of light penetrates to the ground making for a very green looking woodland floor, that in turn attracts a variety of flora and fauna.
These woods are well worth a wander through on a sunny day, in what is understandably proving to be a very popular woodland.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantThere is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
Trees
The woodland boasts many fine mature conifer and deciduous trees, from Scots pine to beech, with holly, birch and larch to name but a few. A sign of how diversity creates a more resilient woodland.
Wildlife
The woods at Millbank are a haven for all wildlife, great and small; its proximity to the larger neighbouring wood known as Scare Wood provides a much larger area to roam. There are areas of semi wetland within the larger wood that further expands its biodiversity. A well placed trail cam is sure to record deer with the possibility of also snapping badgers and red squirrels.
Features
It is the maturity of the trees that add to the majesty of this particular woodland, the trees are well spaced with good strong root systems.
Access, tracks and footpaths
The internal access track is strong and in good repair, providing easy access for all types of vehicle directly to the wood. The wood is open and airy and easy to traverse on foot.
Rights and covenants
All sporting rights are sold with the woodland.
Activities
The woods at Millbank would be the perfect place to set up camp for a few days to explore the wider woodland and as a perfect base for forays into Aberdeenshire and the Cairngorms.
Local area and history
The surrounding area is steeped in history with the close proximity of Castle Fraser and Cluny Castle, both fine examples of 16th century architecture, though the core of Castle Fraser dates back to the 1450s. Craigievar Castle in nearby Alford, a pink castle supposedly the inspiration for Walt Disney, is another local attraction as well as the Loch of Skene: the loch supports concentrations of wildfowl in autumn and winter in particular greylag geese, goldeneye ducks and pink-footed geese.. From here it is a short hop to the Cairngorm National Park, arguably the heart of Scotland in many ways.
