The remarkably beautiful stretch of coastline which skirts around St Brides Bay from Skomer Island in the south to Ramsey Island in the north offers some of Pembrokeshire’s finest scenery. Slake Meadow can be found nestled in between Solva and St Davids on this stretch, set within a dramatic landscape that has inspired authors, artists and poets for years. At around 3 ¼ acres in size, the meadow offers a very beautiful but manageable parcel of land which would be ideal for those with environmental and amenity interests.

Slake Meadow is situated around 100m or so back from the Pembrokeshire coastal path, with no privately owned land in between the two, offering uninterrupted sea views out across St Bride’s bay. A meadow of this proximity to the coast is a rare find and the vistas throughout the seasons make for a magical backdrop.

The land’s coastal location should be factored in when developing a planting plan for the meadow. It is always preferable to plant native species wherever possible, and hardier species would be better suited in this location. Trees native to Pembrokeshire in this category would include Willow, Hawthorn, Juniper, Wild Privet or Gorse. These may be particularly well suited to the perimeter of the meadow where the substantial banks already provide some shelter from the elements, thereby creating a shelter belt which could shield other species further in, such as oaks or alders.

The land itself has an agricultural history and is almost entirely flat, with just a slight gradient dropping from north to south, towards the coast. The majority of the boundaries are formed by long established Pembrokeshire banks, whilst the western boundary is demarcated with a line of post and rail, which could be enhanced by the addition of new hedges across its length. Slake Meadow presents an opportunity to own a private parcel of land set within one of the most renowned areas of West Wales, providing a canvas for conservation as well as a place to retreat to from the rhythms of everyday life.

In terms of finding the meadow, when heading along the A487 from Solva towards St Davids, look out for a turning on your left signed posted to ‘Trelerw’ and leave the main road here. There is also a “planting land for sale” sign on the verge next to the turning. This turning is located in between the hamlet of Nine Wells and the Texaco garage on the outskirts of St Davids. After turning, follow this smaller road for roughly 250m and the entrance gate will be on your left hand side, marked by another sign. Please park here and climb the gate. Looking slightly to your right and follow the access track which runs diagonally across a small field and then along the left hand side of a much larger field. At the end of this field the track will pass through a hedgerow straight ahead, Slake Meadow will be on your left hand side.

Slake Meadow comes with freehold title and is accessed via a track which runs from a public highway. There are no public rights of way across the land.

Activities

There local area is regarded as a haven for a variety of outdoor pursuits including walking, nature watching, cycling, diving, coasteering, surfing and climbing to name a few. A number of excellent beaches are within easy reach of the meadow including Whitesands Bay, Newgale and Little Haven.

Slake Meadow is accessed via a stoned track from the public highway Ffos Y Mynach, just off the A487 between Solva and St Davids.
