Description

Anvil Wood is an incredibly tranquil wood with a wide variety of tree species - oak, Scots pine, hornbeam, birch, chestnut and beech, with the occasional holly, and alder down near the gill. There are fields to the northwest and west, offering fabulous views and letting lots of light into the wood. To the east runs Buckwell Gill and whilst sitting outside of the boundary, the sound of running water is an attractive feature.

A bench has been installed in the west side of the wood, a lovely sunny spot to sit and observe the surrounding nature. There is a ride-stop on the southeast of the wood, with space to pull a vehicle in off the track. Back inside the locked entrance gate, along the southern side of the wood, there is a timber stacking area which is shared with other owners.

Here is a wood so quiet and peaceful it is easy to be tempted to just to sit and enjoy it. Ancient woodland indicators such as hard ferns, dog’s mercury, primrose and bluebells are found on the forest floor. These help confirm the ancient status of the woodland. The soil is clay over sandstone.

Trees

Anvil Wood comprises 3 separate compartments. The furthest west is best described as ‘mixed broadleaf and conifer high forest’ and features splendid hornbeam along the boundaries. Hornbeam could be coppiced with an opportunity to retain some standards. The middle section and furthest east is a Scots pine and English oak plantation. Selective thinning would benefit the oaks allowing them to thrive. There is another area best described as ‘mixed broadleaf coppice’ which extends south from the north boundary of Anvil Wood which abuts the adjoining woodland.

Anvil Wood has been designated by Natural England as partly ASNW (Ancient semi-natural woodland) - the north side of the wood; and partly PAWS (Planting on an Ancient Woodland Site) – mainly the south side of the wood. This land has been wooded for centuries (since at least 1600AD), so in the seed bed there are probably many wildflowers and mosses from former times which will often pop up if any direct sunlight reaches them. The ‘hedgerow growth’ along the west boundary of Anvil Wood is subject to a TPO details of which are available upon request.

Wildlife

Surrounded with woodlands and with a constant supply of natural water, Anvil Wood is abundant with wildlife. Deer have been seen within the wood and great spotted and green woodpeckers, nuthatch, sparrowhawks and buzzards have also been recorded in the area. There is plenty of opportunity to enhance the habitat for wildlife here, from the simple provision of bird and bat boxes to the management of the tree cover and ground flora.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Access to Anvil Wood is via a single locked wooden gate off a bridleway leading off Lakehurst Lane. The track to Anvil Wood partly stoned and partly unstoned. A ride stop entrance has been installed and here owners are able to drive in and park a car within Anvil Wood.

There are no public rights of way within Anvil Wood. The track from the end of the tarmacked Lakehurst Lane to the gate is a bridleway.

This exceptionally private woodland is the perfect spot for camping with family and friends. Being a manageable size and incredibly varied, this wood would be perfect for someone keen to learn all about ancient woodland management.

Local area and history

Anvil Wood is part of a larger wood known as Anderson’s Wood. It is within a lovely unspoilt rural area of Ancient Woodland and is situated within the High Weald AONB. This area was closely associated with the Wealden iron industry in Ashburnham in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Probably the hornbeam and chestnut coppice here was cut regularly to supply charcoal for the furnaces nearby. The iron industry is completely gone now, and only silent ghosts remain.

Approx. 12 miles from the south coast, the towns of Bexhill and Hastings are within easy reach. The historic town of Battle is approx. 10 miles away.

This will take you less then 200m south of the main entrance gate to the track entrance leading off Lakehurst Lane, as shown by the red dot on the map.   • From Woods Corner on the B2096 road, take the road going south by the Swan Inn, this is South Lane signposted to Bodle Street Green.
  • Keeping left onto Herring’s Road, after about 1 1/3 miles just after Herrings Farm, turn left into Lakehurst Lane. This is a winding narrow lane with only a few passing places, please drive slowly.
  • After about 1 ¼ miles along Lakehurst Lane you will reach the end of the tarmac lane, and at that point, turn right onto a stoned track.
  • After about 200 meters you will reach a wooden gate on your right, where there is space to park. Please be sure not to park on the lane or block the entrance.
  • Walk up the stone track and after about 120 meters from the lane entrance gate you will reach a fork in the track. Turn right. About 110 meters further you reach another fork, keep right down the slope and cross over the stream.
  • Continue up the track or approx. 120 meters and the entrance to Anvil Wood with its boundaries marked in RED is in front of you.
