Description
Arrow Wood is an ancient woodland featuring sweet chestnut coppice with the occasional mature oak standard. There are various other broadleaf species including mountain ash, birch, wild cherry, hawthorn, holly and hazel. Evidence of bluebells are found on the forest floor, and you will also find mosses and bracken. A rustic bench is situated in a clearing a short walk from the ride stop entrance. Arrow Wood has great access, with a stoned track leading to the entrance, and tracks to the east, north and west side of the wood. The high-quality chestnut has been well-managed in the past and could provide an income.
Adjoining Arrow Wood (to the south) is Mail Wood. Mail Wood (7 ½ acres) is a sweet chestnut coppice wood and is currently available for sale.
It is worth noting that woodland owners may be able to get relief from Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax. More information on this can be found here.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
The west side of Arrow Wood will be ready for cutting in approx. 11 years, and the east side of the wood in approx. 5 years. Of course, it will conveniently regrow. It is worth noting that Woodlands.co.uk offer £300 towards a course for a new owner. This would provide the opportunity to learn the skills required to resume coppicing in the future. The sweet chestnut would provide a good source of firewood, or durable timber for making posts. Alternatively, an owner could encourage a more varied and diverse wood to develop by ‘singling’ the chestnut and planting mixed native broadleaves. You can read more about this in our blog.
Arrow Wood has been designated as Ancient Replanted Woodland (PAWS) by Natural England. This land has been wooded since at least 1600AD. Arrow Wood is part of a larger Local Wildlife Site - you can find out more about this here.
There is a Management Plan for Abbey Wood (of which Arrow Wood is a part) – details of this are available upon request. The Management Plan is not mandatory, but it is full of good advice, and a lot of background information which will certainly be interesting and useful.

Crossbills, sparrow hawks, buzzards and kestrels, green and great spotted woodpeckers and lesser redpoll have been recorded in the area.
