Description
Spur Wood is a quiet and attractive ancient woodland situated within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is located about 4½ miles southeast from the village of Lamberhurst. It is part of a larger well-established woodland known as Combwell Wood.
Bluebells flourish in spring and there are glades which would make wonderful spots for private family camping. A rustic style bench has been installed in a clearing amongst the mixed broadleaves.
The minor electricity wayleave, all along the west boundary, brings sunlight into that entire side of the wood. This wayleave helps to encourage butterflies and other invertebrates. There are no public rights of way through the wood and sporting rights are included. Like the adjoining woodlands, Spur Wood is within an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
Spur Wood comprises mainly broadleaves (sweet chestnut, birch, oak, mountain ash) with the occasional larch. Some chestnut stems have windblown, which could be processed for fuel for heating the home.
Spur Wood has been designated as Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland (ASNW) by Natural England. ASNW is woodland that has been under constant tree cover since at least 1600AD. It is valued as a rich reserve of biodiversity.
Wildlife
There is plenty of opportunity to enhance the habitat for wildlife here, from the simple provision of bird and bat boxes to the management of the tree cover and ground flora.
The SSSI notes that Combwell Wood (of which Spur Wood is a part) has a large number of plants that are typical of south-eastern ancient woodlands, these being particularly associated with the gills and the open rides. Full details of the SSI can be downloaded from here.
