SOLD: Barmore Wood £45,000 Freehold

Description

Barmore Wood is located within the larger Barlae Bridge woods with excellent access to the main Stranraer to Dumfries highway. Quiet and tranquil, the woodland has an open outlook over the surrounding farmland. Planted in the 1980's with Sitka spruce, the trees have grown slowly in the low nutrient peat giving tightly packed growth rings and good quality timber. The wood features an open strip to the south and the west which has given opportunity for willow and bog myrtle to spring up amongst the dense sphagnum and course grasses. From the main gate, the access track is along a former railway line with an adjoining drainage channel which hosts a large variety of aquatic invertebrates.

Cut pathways through the wood start at the useful hardstanding and wend their way to the northern boundary fence, from where there are open views across the Machars and onto Cairnsmore of Fleet.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.

Trees

In the main the trees are planted Sitka spruce, these are supplemented by the occasional birch with willow and bog myrtle in the open areas. A number of oak seedlings are a recent arrival perhaps brought into the wood by jays building a winter store and then failing to collect.

The peat substrate supports a unique mix of wildflowers, mosses and plants including the carnivorous sundew.

Wildlife

The trackside drainage channel, despite its relatively modest size, is home to an astonishing variety of aquatic life. Frogs, toads and newts represent the amphibians, with a range of diving beetles, pond skaters, and water boatmen filling the invertebrate niche. Beneath the surface lurk the fearsome predatory larva of dragonflies, damselflies and great diving beetles.

Throughout the spruce narrow trails are the habitual transit pathways of deer; both roe and red deer are resident in the area.

The lichen-covered branches provide rich pickings for a variety of tits finches and warblers with the harsh cries of jays, rooks and crows echoing through the treetops.

Features

A stone-built hardstanding is a good starting point to explore the wood and a great place to stack firewood prior to its journey to the log burner.

A rustic bench invites repose and a location to while away some time and enjoy the natural surrounding.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Barmore Wood is easily accessed from the A75 Dumfries to Stranraer highway and then down a single-track road to the gated entrance. From there a well-found stone track leads to, and then along a former railway track to the entrance of the wood.

Within the wood small pathways have been cut through the spruce to allow access into the heart of the wood.

Rights and covenants

The sporting rights are owned and included in the sale.

Activities

An ideal location for a quiet camping spot it should be possible to create a small cabin, subject to the appropriate planning consent, an excellent use for the slow-grown standing timber in the wood.

The spruce is now of a size where sensitive thinning could be considered. This would allow more light in and give the opportunity for broadleaf planting thus improving the biodiversity of the wood. This could also provide a small source of domestic firewood, easily processed and stacked to dry on the provided hardstanding.

Local area and history

The is situated in the heart of the Machars of Galloway, this low lying yet undulating forms a peninsula into the Solway Firth and benefits from an unusually mild climate due to the influence of the gulf stream. Easy to miss from the ground, but evident from the OS map the surrounding landscape is dotted with drumlins. Often wooded over these are geological remnants of the last ice age.

The northern boundary track lies along the former Dumfries to Stranraer railway line which was closed, with many others, at the behest of Lord Beeching in his swingeing railway reform of 1963.
