SOLD: Laggan Wood £65,000 Freehold

Description

Perched on the edge of the River Stinchar Valley, Laggan Wood forms an outlying portion of the larger Daljarrock woodlands. Although mainly a spruce plantation, the wood contains several areas where native trees are predominant in surprising numbers. A wee burn, which rises from a spring on the nearby hillside, bubbles vigorously through the wood to exit via a culvert under the railway line.

The topography slopes down towards the river but nature has thoughtfully provided a series of parallel level terrace areas, greatly facilitating activities within the wood and creating a pleasant and varied feel.

A visit to the wood is recommended and well worth the trip to this secluded and little-visited corner of Scotland. Please allow yourself a good timeframe for your visit; it is a pleasure not to be conducted in haste.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.

Trees

The main body of the wood is set to Sitka spruce which is growing well in these upland conditions.

Several glades comprising native ash, birch and rowan can be found dotted throughout the wood, well sheltered by the surrounding conifers. Laggan is Gaelic for little hollow, several of which are found within the woods.

The lower reaches of the wood contain a good section of hazel coppice, with holly, birch and sycamore dispersed evenly throughout. Occasional yew and oak hark back to when the plantation was predominantly broadleaf.

Wildlife

The woodland is a haven for several endangered species including the native red squirrel and the reclusive pine marten. The more common mammals, roe deer and badger are still a delight to behold and well worth setting a trail camera to capture their nocturnal habits.

Birdlife large and small are no strangers to the wood, with squawking jays, industrious woodpeckers and secretive woodcock to name but a few.

Features

Laggan Wood contains a useful area of hardstanding, to facilitate management of the wood and to enable small scale timber stacking. A rustic bench at a prominent point is a good place to collect one's thoughts and engage with the natural world around.

The wee burn tumbling through the wood, adds greatly to the assets of this wood and hosts its own microcosm of wetland plants and animals.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Access to the wood is via a well made historic track through the main body of the wood out onto the moor and along the boundary. A full right of access over this track to the wood is in place.

Within the wood, access paths have been formed towards the old forestry track that transects the wood roughly north-south.

Rights and covenants

The sporting rights are owned and included in the sale.

Activities

The quiet isolation is ideal for a woodland hideaway to come and relax and engage with the local wildlife. For the energetic, nearby walks and the tranquil unspoilt environment make the area perfect for the nature lover and general outdoor enthusiast. A walk up Knockdolian Hill provides panoramic land and sea views across to Aran, the Ailsa Craig and The Mull of Kintyre.

Local area and history

Surrounding Area: The huge Galloway and Carrick Forests can be found further to the east and an early spring wildlife festival takes place in neighbouring Dumfries & Galloway every year. The coastal town of Girvan and shingle beaches at Woodland and Ballantrae Bay, are within 10 miles to the West. Nearby Pinwherry and Barrhill villages have local services whilst Colmonell and Dailly have forestry mills/suppliers. Ayr, Stranraer and Newton Stewart are within 30 miles.

A sharp-eyed observer will be able to spot local limekilns at High Aldons. The access track along the moor was originally built to bring coal in from the station at Pinmore with a return load of lime for export across the country.
