Community Woodlands Projects

One of our main aims at Woodlands.co.uk is to get more people into woodlands, including those people and groups who can't afford to buy their own wood. For the last 2 years we have been running a community woodlands project and in that space of time we have had more than 500 requests from people who wish to use woodlands for activities involving the local community. We now have people who use our woods for children's groups, scouts, forest schools, social forestry, bushcraft courses, woodlands management demonstrations, off-road horse riding organisations, orienteering and coppicing.

As we have received such a large number of enquiries, we have decided to set up a forum to put community groups in touch with other woodland owners who would be interested in allowing their woodland to be used in this way.

Are you a woodland owner?

Below are some of the projects requiring woodland. You may also wish to read our advice on hosting a project in your woodland.

Suffolk

A non-profit organisation encouraging and supporting children and young people to access challenging and adventurous play in the natural environment. We are looking for a small woodland. We would be willing to pay rent for the right space. The idea is to take the activities used in Forest school and other types of fun activities possible in the forest such as camp cooking and environmental art, and use the activities for there play value. This project targets children and young people from hard to reach communities. Myself and my colleagues have numerous years of experience in play and youth work, I currently am a senior manager for Cambridge City Council’s children and young people's service, we hold a range of qualifications including Forest schools level 3 BETC. Within 5 miles of Crawley, West Sussex

We are part of the Sussex Wildlife Trust and work to engage local community groups in improving local green spaces for wildlife, as well as running a Forest Schools project to introduce children (and families) to all aspects of outdoor living, which can improve people's confidence and general skill levels, as well as raise awareness of various conservation issues. We are looking for a private woodland in a quiet, secluded area near Crawley but which has reasonably good access and parking spaces in which to develop our project in the future. If you think that you can help and would like to discuss it further with us, please call 01293 550730 and leave your details if we are not in. Thanks. More details

I am looking for a woods to run fitness classes from. The focus of the classes would be on natural movement and would include trail running and some form of trim trail where I would use rocks, logs and ropes for an all over workout. For an idea of something similar, you can look at a website called www.movnat.com. The ethos is all about fitness for the body and mind and an appreciation of nature. I would hold other awarness sessions to include wilderness therapy/life coaching and tree, plant, and animal recognition. The classes would be for both adults and children. Thanks. More details

Woodland - Within a two hour drive of London

Hi, I am a Scout Leader and Survival Skills instructor for a Scout group in South Bucks. I have been trying for a number of years to source a woodland that would allow us to work on the Scout Survival Badge, Outdoor Challenge badges etc etc. I have taken many scouts away to a site in Glos. but would like to add other sites to our options. If you can help, and you have a wood, call the Scout Team. We won't blow things up like the A Team...honest. Scouts insurance is good...but not that good. We are very blessed in that we have good access to many motorways within a short drive, M25, M1, M4, M40, M3, A1M etc. So a two hour drive or slightly more would not be a problem. Thank you for any help you can offer. More details
