Here we see Allan Course (the Backyard Blacksmith) at the Bentley Woodfair, demonstrating how to make a simple but effective hook from a six inch nail using an inexpensive, mobile forge set-up - ideal for woodland working. Allan`s skill is apparent and his enthusiasm is infectious - as he encourages us to have a go, keep safe and enjoy! http://www.bentley.org.uk/ An Adliberate film http://www.adliberate.co.uk for WoodlandsTV http://www.woodlands.co.uk/tv

Very inspirational! Been needing to make my own carving gouges for a while, thanks for the tips.
Couldn't I just hammer the nail into the tree and hang stuff on it?
This guy comes across as a bit of a noggin, bending a nail is not blacksmithing!!!, just use a blowtorch , and yep just bang a nail into a tree !!!.
Join the blacksmithing for beginners page on facebook. you can get a good grasp on what you need vs what you want very quickly. Just ask some questions and the guys and girls there will be more than happy to help you out 🙂
I am the blacksmith in the video and I'd just like to explain why I showed something as simple as a tree-hook from a six-inch nail. Firstly, my passion is to inspire people to have a go themselves – if I had demonstrated something like a reverse twist on a square section or a helical basket split it would be well beyond the capabilities of a beginner and could put people off from trying. Secondly, the film guys wanted me to make something from start to finish in a very short time, so it had to be something quick and easy.
You must check out Simon Summers, heritage blacksmith. He makes astonishing stuff using a very primitive forge setup, and is a master coppersmith too.
Allan Course cheers m8
