Top Trees of Tortworth

Jacob Stow (@jakeofthewoods), Director of Tortworth Forest Centre at Tortworth Arboretum, takes us on a walk through this historically and culturally rich woodland, speaking with knowledge and passion about some of the `top trees` here, such as the Giant Sequoia, Monkey Puzzle, Sweet Chestnut, Japanese Maple and Western Red Cedar as well as a range of rare and unusual Oaks. Jake shares his enjoyment of discovering, mapping and learning more about these trees. The Arboretum was first designed and planted in the 19th century and Jake explains how its originator, the 3rd Earl of Ducie, acquired many unusual and exotic plants from around the world to impress with his knowledge of trees and his social status. Today the team is keen to restore the Arboretum - looking at original records, replenishing lost trees and using viable seeds from existing trees to continue the Arboretum into the future. http://tortwortharboretum.org .
