Slow connection? Watch in lower quality

In this film by accomplished film maker Henry Kirkwood, we meet wildlife cinematographer Giles Pitman who tells us about southern wood ants (Formica rufa). This species of wood ant is listed as 'near threatened' on the global IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Giles talks about the many benefits these ants bring to the woodland ecosystem and what we can do to create the right circumstances in our woodlands to enable them to thrive.

Giles also refers to the iNaturalist app to record sightings you have of these ants and other wildlife to help generate data for science and conservation. It also helps you with plant and animal identification. This app can be downloaded for free via the App Store and Google Play store.

Giles Pitman is currently working on a conservation documentary 'Bison Resurgence' which uncovers the resilient tale of the European bison.
