Description
Venny Wood is a perfect introduction to the joys of woodland ownership – a manageable size with good access and a useful parking area. A track off the access road leads you into the heart of the woodland which feels miles away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
There are numerous clearings and glades where you can sit around the picnic bench located in the heart of the woodland and enjoy the serenity of the location. This is an ideal spot to set up camp or picnic. A small stream adds a pleasant background feature.
Venny Wood is nestled on part of a gently sloping valley on the edge of Dartmoor in this beautiful part of rural Devon. The location is tranquil yet it is conveniently located within 5 minutes drive of the A30.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
The woodland has an established canopy of trees such as oak, ash, holly and birch with large poplar trees interspersed throughout. The woodland structure is varied with a good 'understory' of hazel trees, the nuts of which are the preferred choice of woodland mammals such as the dormouse.
Wildlife
Both red and roe deer frequent Venny Wood and the surrounding fields. Foxes pass through the wood on their way to and from dens. Wood mice munch the hazel nuts in the autumn. Numerous bird species are seen and heard in and around Venny Wood. Swifts sweep past the woodland edge whilst feeding in the adjoining pasture.
Features
Meandering through the center of Venny Wood is a small spring fed stream.
Old hedge banks lined with mature oak trees form the boundaries at the north, south and west of the woodland.
Access, tracks and footpaths
Venny Wood is accessed from a quiet country lane via a stoned track which is also a bridleway. This track is suitable for most vehicles other than cars with a low ground clearance.
The wood is private with no public rights of way within the woodland.
Rights and covenants
The standard covenant applies.
Activities
The peaceful setting of Venny Wood makes it an ideal backdrop for days out and overnight stays with family and friends - perhaps trying out hammocking.
The hazel coppice understory is an excellent sustainable resource for the woods person. When cut, or coppiced, the hazel will grow back within a few years and the long, straight and strong flexible poles are very useful. Traditional uses of hazel weaving include hurdles, which make great woodland screens, along with other green woodworking uses. Hazel coppice is also an excellent renewable wood fuel. Another use is for hazel poles is den and shelter building within the woodland - great fun!
Local area and history
Venny Wood is situated near the mid-Devon village of Cheriton Bishop, meaning 'church town' in Anglo-Saxon. The village church, based on a Norman style is well worth visiting. There is a pub, a shop, a post office and a cafe within the village, along with a primary school.
The village of Tedburn St. Mary is a few miles away and has a useful agricultural supplies shop selling fence posts, chainsaws and parts and many other items useful for the woodland owner.
The market town of Crediton is within a few miles as is the City of Exeter. At the nearby village of Yeoford there is a train station with links to Exeter, Barnstaple and Okehampton.
Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager Stuart Brooking.
