Description

A wide variety of mixed broadleaf woodland in this ancient and semi-natural (ASNW) Shropshire wood. Perfect for enjoying and developing an established woodland within walking distance of nearby Craven Arms.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant

Trees

As an ancient woodland, there have been trees in this location since the 1600s. Within the woodlands there are mature Oaks, Sycamores, Ash and Beech to name a few.

There are Birch, Hawthorn and Blackthorn on the lower areas, At the higher point there are many pioneer trees, providing large canopies and clear areas. We also have seen many other species such as Holly.

We're aware that 5-10 years ago the woodland was coppiced, and there is evidence of this in the south eastern corner of the woodland.

Wildlife

While we were working in the woodland, Red Kites were often seen overhead. We also observed Woodcock and there were lots of signs of active Woodpeckers. Talking to a resident (of over 70 years) he has seen Deer and possibly Pine Marten within the woods. Lots of small mammal tracks would mean that a trail cam would capture some of the exciting visitors.

There are areas of established Snowdrops and widespread Bluebells in the spring. Summer brings Honeysuckle and in winter the Holly provides some colour.

Features

The aspect of this wood protects the woodland from prevailing winds, but also allows for the afternoon sunlight.

The under-canopy is easily managed, and could be managed with handtools if wanted. There is an upper plateau where the land flattens out.

Easily accessible by a family car, with easy flat parking.

Access, tracks and footpaths

Upon purchase, the new owner will have an access key which will allow them to drive to Bluebell Field Wood. This track is a public foot path and is used by pedestrians. A permissive footpath runs north south along the eastern boundary.

There are no rights of way for the public within the rest of the wood. We are working with Shropshire Council to produce signage and fencing to reduce the amount of people detouring from these rights of way.

Local area and history

All of the mother wood of Sallow Coppice is classified as an Ancient and Semi Natural Woodland (ASNW). This means that it has been under continuous tree cover of native trees and shrub spieces since at least 1600 AD.

Within walking distance of Bluebell Field Wood is Stokesay Castle. It was constructed at the end of the 13th century by Laurence of Ludlow, who at the time was one of the richest men in England. It remains a treasure by-passed by time, one of the best places to visit in England to experience what medieval life was like. Today the castle has been carefully restored and there is plenty to do here on a family day out. The castle is within walking distance of Bluebell Field Wood.

Nearby there is the Bronze age settlement of Norton Camp.
