Community Woodlands Projects

One of our main aims at Woodlands.co.uk is to get more people into woodlands, including those people and groups who can't afford to buy their own wood. For the last 2 years we have been running a community woodlands project and in that space of time we have had more than 500 requests from people who wish to use woodlands for activities involving the local community. We now have people who use our woods for children's groups, scouts, forest schools, social forestry, bushcraft courses, woodlands management demonstrations, off-road horse riding organisations, orienteering and coppicing.

As we have received such a large number of enquiries, we have decided to set up a forum to put community groups in touch with other woodland owners who would be interested in allowing their woodland to be used in this way.

I'm considering buying my own woodland, but would like to experience the realities before I take the plunge! So, I'm willing to help out with any woodland management tasks in the Bristol area. We are a small team (4-6) of sled dog enthusiasts, looking for an area to train, primarily through the winter months, to allow us to prepare for races. We use scooters, wheeled rigs and mountain bikes and are ideally looking for a woodland with 2+ miles of trails running throughout it, although we are more than happy to work with the landowner if these need to be developed. We run mixed breed sled dogs, siberian huskies and Canadian Eskimo dogs. We are all experienced in what we do and hold liability insurance, for ourselves and the dogs. The running of the dogs is actually very low impact and we also be more than happy to work with any landowner, to assist in the development and maintenance of the site. We also have contacts with other woodland owners within the UK, who allow sled dog training, which we would be more than willing to assist a landowner in developing links with, if they felt that this could be something they could develop, allowing others access to the woodland. I am looking for woodland where Scouts can practice bushcraft and learn about nature and conservation. In the longer term I would like to be able to run small overnight camps but that is certainly a fair way off and would not be an essential prerequisite. Devon, requires running water source if possible.

I run a small Survival Company teaching the basics to survive any eventuality. We are looking for any woodland area within Devon, preferably with a running water source, although not essential. We would need permission to light fires (in a very conrolled and carefully monitored manner), erect temporary all-natural shelters as well as despatch a few squirrels or rabbits for food preparation lessons. We are obviously happy to pay a rent for the use, to be discussed (I currently rent from Tracy at woodlands.co.uk, for example).
