Description
Burnan Wood is an unspoiled Ancient Semi Natural Woodland benefitting from river frontage along the River Ehern, that flows from Ennerdale. Located right on the edge of the Lake District National Park, this is a beautiful and peaceful corner of Cumbria. The wood contains a diverse range of native broadleaf trees and woodland plants and benefits from a well built woodland shelter, built with full planning consent.
Initially level, the woodland slopes down to the river where the landscape levels out again. A small area of open meadow contrasts pleasantly with the more dense woodland.
A large number of hazel coppice stools are evidence of the woodlands industrial past, as it was previously worked as coppice woodland for small scale charcoal production.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenantTrees
Exclusively broadleaf, the wood contains a varied mix of native deciduous species. Magnificent oak trees dominate the canopy with sycamore, ash, alder and birch as companions. An understory of hazel, rowan and holly make for a beautiful and well balanced environment.
Wood sorrel, enchanters nightshade, dogs mercury, bluebells and hedge woundwort vie with ferns and mosses to carpet the woodland floor.
The meadow area is fringed with willow and meadowsweet, knapweed, angelica, greater burnett and birdsfoot trefoil can be spotted amongst the grasses.
Wildlife
The native red squirrel makes its home in the wood aided by a local conservation group dedicated to its survival. Deer and badger tracks cross the wood and otter trails lead on into the river.
The river has a SSSI designation due to the presence of fresh water mussels in the gravel beds beneath the water. The River Ehen is classed as a spate river and can, on the right day, offer superb fishing for runs of Sea Trout and Atlantic Salmon. Timing of the runs is very water dependant. For salmon fishing the best time to fish is from August onwards to the end of October. You can get more information from The local fishing club.
Features
Burnan wood features a large shed which has been installed with planning consent from the local authority. Perfect for storage, shelter or even an overnight camping stopover.
River frontage is a much sought after bonus especially as the fishing rights are included in the sale.
Access, tracks and footpaths
Access into the wood is via a well founded, shared access track, which comes directly off the public highway.
Rights and covenants
Sporting rights are owned and included in the sale.
Activities
Burnan wood is the perfect platform for woodland management, conservation efforts, occasional recreational camping and above all enjoying this peaceful corner of Cumbria.
Local area and history
With the charming village of Ennerdale bridge less than four miles away, this is a quiet and little-visited corner of the Lake district. Nearby Ennerdale water is rated as Cumbria's most secluded lake. Having said that there are plenty of B&Bs and pubs serving the local community and the St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay coast to coast path, which passes to the north of the wood.
A mysterious creature of legend may even have passed this way: in the 1800s a large predator known as the Girt dog of Ennerdale terrorised the local sheep and was finally brought down along the banks of the Ehen.
